Menopause typically consists of three differing stages:

- Perimenopause or "menopause transition": typically 8-10 years before menopause, Ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and periods stop.
- Menopause: No menstrual periods for 12 months, the ovaries stops producing reproductive hormones such as estrogen and progesterone as the body no longer requires them.

- Post-menopause: You remain in post menopause for the remainder of your life you can continue to have mild menopause symptoms for several years into post-menopause. People in post-menopause are at a greater risk of osteoporosis and heart disease due to the low estrogen levels.

However, for some women their is four stages as they commence with Premature Menopause.

- Premature Menopause is different to menopause as it effects 0.1% of women under the age of 30, and 1% of women under the age of 40. It is often an indication the ovaries are not working properly. Symptoms are like normal menopause although often more severe. Sometimes the actual cause remains a mystery it can be related to medical treatments like chemotherapy, medical procedures such as hysterectomy, trauma, or certain health conditions including Ovarian or breast cancers.
